Everyday Carry: The Phantom

The Phantom

The Phantom is the everyday-carry Defender built for a low profile. There’s no point and no edge — it’s blunt everywhere — so it carries comfortably as part of daily life and doesn’t read as a weapon at a glance. But don’t let the clean lines fool you: a heavier head and a necked-down striking tip put more concentrated kinetic energy on target than our classic Guppy, and the digit-capture hole lets you control an attacker in an instant — all completely non-lethal. Just 1.2 ounces and 5.5 inches, in clear, black, or blood red.

At a glance:

  • Non-lethal — built for control and a functional stop
  • Blunt everywhere — no point, no edge
  • 5″ long · 1.2 oz · high-strength acrylic
  • Heavier head + necked-down tip — more kinetic energy than the Guppy
  • Digit-capture hole to control and hold an attacker
  • Retention “bump” handle for a locked-in grip
  • Carry your way: breakaway lanyard, Kydex holster, neck rig, clip (add-ons)
  • Clear, black, or blood red · includes free, unlimited online Defender training

The Phantom — the story

The Phantom started life as the Traveler, and this is its next step — same low-profile idea, meaningfully improved.

The whole point of the Phantom is that it’s blunt everywhere. No point, no edge — just clean, rounded lines. That makes it easy and comfortable to carry as part of everyday life, and it doesn’t announce itself as a weapon. But I wanted more than a discreet shape. So the real question was: how do we make it hit significantly harder without adding a single sharp point?

The answer was mass and geometry. We increased the mass of the head, so when you use it like a hammer there’s simply more moving behind the strike — more kinetic energy on target. Then we necked down the front end so it lands on a smaller surface area than the Guppy, which concentrates all of that energy into a tighter area against hard, bony structure. The pommel is necked in for the same reason: smaller contact, higher energy transfer. More mass plus a smaller contact point is just physics working in your favor.

The digit-capture hole is where the Phantom really shines for control. Capture a finger or thumb in the hole, lock it down, and twist or turn — the attacker goes wherever you go. It’s control through leverage, not injury, and it’s completely non-lethal: enough to stop the situation and hold someone safely until help arrives. The rounded back of the head still grips for close-in control, too.

We also accented the retention “bump” on the handle so the tool seats into your hand and stays there — you’re not going to lose your grip on it, and you don’t need grip tape (though grip tape is a nice add-on for high-stress conditions).

And unlike the Guppy — which really only carried by its lanyard holes — the Phantom is built for the full carry lineup: a quick-disconnect breakaway lanyard, a Kydex holster, a neck rig, or a robust clip, all available as add-ons. Carry it the way that fits your day.

We’re a little short on Phantom how-to videos at the moment — more are on the way. In the meantime, the Phantom handles much like the other Defenders, so the Defender 1 videos below translate directly. Each tool brings its own personality to the encounter.

Traveling with your Phantom

Rules for carrying self-defense tools vary by city, state, and country — and at airports, security officers have discretion over what may pass a checkpoint. Before you travel, check the current rules for where you’re going, and when in doubt, pack your Defender in checked luggage. Don’t rely on any tool to clear a security screening.

Legal

The Phantom is meant only for genuine, responsible self-defense — to stop a threat and get to safety, never to punish. You’re responsible for knowing and following all local, state, and federal laws on carrying and using a self-defense tool wherever you go — including airport and travel rules. Every Defender is made for ethical, legal use only.
